Back to basic

I changed back to Palm OS.. was lucky to get “journalist’ price for new Treo 680. I surrender my Nokia E61 for Palm’s simplicity and its robustness.. compare to E61 this one has no wifi and 3G or pushmail… I was wondering if I made the right decision when I opened the box.

The more time I spend with Treo, the more I enjoy it. I missed the  technology so-called 3G, but I was surprised found that Palm browser blazer is sometimes faster than E61 browser with the 3G channels. I try several times and end up with similar result. So not bad.. I might not get streaming TV or video call, but I have no interest on that.. at least in these days, when 3G is still premature and costly. So Im quite happy with the browser. Others like chatting, email, has no problem at all. Gmail is faster downloaded in Palm.. Again .. maybe it is coincidence but at least I have no complain with that.

I have to admit sometimes WiFi is useful to save some cost, given
that sometimes you get free connection compare to the GPRS. But again..
I only use it once in a while.. cost is not significant in that sense.
I have laptop to connect with wifi.. so I easily forget E61′s wifi.

Blackberry is being in my waiting list for the past several years.
If I were an Indosat user, I might have already bought one when it was
launched several years ago. Just a day before I decide to trade off my
E61, Excelcom (GSM provider that Im using), announced their adoption to
Blackberry technology … with cheaper fees probably…. mmmm… so
what… ?? Last time I ever think about this whether I would be more
effective using the berry. But right now with the ease of internet
connection (still internet is expensive and pretty slow down here..)
with hotspot, office broadband, dial up at home.. I don’t think
Blackberry will add more value to my email management … however,
people in here is not taking email urgently .. sms and voice is more
reliable for that purposes. Another thing is spams… we would stuck
with picking (with relatively small screen, stylus, etc) relevant email
among those spams. In Outlook, I use Qurb software which serve as
effective as junk filter in my Entourage. Anyway..  I found also that
it is hard to implement David Allen’s GTD method in mobile emails. So I
really missed my long waited Blackberry, but I am pretty sure I don’t
need it at this moment. In 4-5 years, I think such berry techno will be
a must..

I really missed my E61, It just perfect (E61 claimed as the
smartphone of the year by various publications). I like the design,
thin and sturdy like, keyboard is better than Treo, but Treo has small
bonus.. touchscreen and VGA camera. I rarely need camera, since I
almost bring my portable IXUS 700 at all time. Now Symbian OS is
dominating smartphone system. More than 70% are using that system. UIQ
in Ericsson P or Communicator series might be powerful, but I feel that
Palm OS is still more solid than E61′s Symbian 6 3rdEd. I am looking
for simplicity and QWERT keyboard in candy bar  .. E61 and Treo are the
answers. But I am a fan of Palm :) – I cant wait to write comments on
Microsoft Pocket PC.

The downside of the Treo is the battery..  recent patch from Palm
(www.palmone.com) to solve camera function that drain the battery is do
much help, but still the battery would not last for 2 days.

Well.. let see. Recent survey says that Indonesian change their
handphone every 8 months. I am now less than 4 months.. which is not
good at all.. but I do have explanation on that… :) I hope Palm or O2
or Nokia not going to launch such a revolutionary handhelds in 1-2
years…. to justify my Treo investment.

The bad news is … Mr Jobs… just showing his next masterpiece…
the iPhone. Which I almost believe that I would easily surrender my
-whatever smartphone I have- and my iPod to get it…
